When Should You Start Packing for a Move? A Week-by-Week Timeline

If you're wondering when you should start packing for a move, the answer is probably earlier than you think.

You don't need to pack your entire house six weeks before moving day.

You just need to start.

For most households, beginning the process about 4–6 weeks before moving day gives you enough time to declutter, pack gradually and still live comfortably in your home.

Here's how to break it down.

4–6 Weeks Before Moving: Declutter First

Before you pack a single box, get rid of the things you already know aren't coming with you.

Go room by room and separate obvious:

  • donations

  • trash

  • items to sell

  • things that belong somewhere else

Don't turn this into a massive home-organization project.

The goal is simply to avoid spending time and money moving things you don't want.

This is also a good time to decide how you're going to pack.

If you're using cardboard, you'll need to estimate how many different boxes and supplies you'll need.

If you're renting reusable moving boxes, reserve them early enough that you can start packing gradually rather than waiting until moving week.

3–4 Weeks Before Moving: Pack What You Don't Use

Now the house starts going into boxes.

Start with things you can comfortably live without for the next few weeks:

  • seasonal decorations

  • books

  • framed photos

  • extra linens

  • guest rooms

  • collectibles

  • serving pieces

  • rarely used kitchen appliances

  • off-season clothing

The goal isn't to make your house empty.

It's to quietly remove everything you don't need for everyday life.

Pack by room, not by opportunity

One of the easiest ways to make unpacking miserable is to fill a box with whatever happens to fit.

A candle from the living room, towels from the hall closet and something from the kitchen may technically fit in the same box.

But now you've created a box that belongs nowhere.

Instead, keep each box associated with a room or category and label it immediately.

Future you will be very grateful.

2–3 Weeks Before Moving: Start the Real Packing

This is when you can start working through the majority of the house.

Pack:

  • most décor

  • extra dishes and glassware

  • additional cookware

  • most clothing

  • office supplies

  • toys that aren't being used regularly

  • storage areas

  • garage items you won't need before moving day

Try to finish one area before bouncing to another.

A completely packed guest room is more useful than six rooms that are each 30% packed.

1 Week Before Moving: Pack Almost Everything

By the final week, you should be moving toward essentials-only living.

Your home won't look normal anymore, and that's okay.

Pack most remaining:

  • clothing

  • bathroom items

  • pantry items

  • kitchen equipment

  • electronics

  • children's belongings

  • linens

Now create one very important category:

LAST OUT / FIRST IN

These are the things that should not disappear into the moving truck.

Think:

  • toilet paper

  • medications

  • phone chargers

  • basic toiletries

  • important documents

  • cleaning supplies

  • trash bags

  • a few towels

  • basic tools

  • pet necessities

  • children's immediate essentials

  • anything you'll need the first night

Keep these items clearly separated from everything else.

Your first night in the new house is not the time to discover your phone charger is somewhere inside box #47.

The Day Before Your Move

Ideally, very little actual packing should be happening now.

Your job should be checking, cleaning and preparing.

Walk through:

  • closets

  • cabinets

  • drawers

  • garage

  • laundry room

  • refrigerator

  • outdoor areas

Then make sure everything is labeled and ready to move.

If you're using stackable reusable moving boxes, this is a great time to organize them by room or moving priority so loading is faster.

Moving Day

Your packing should be finished.

Keep your LAST OUT / FIRST IN items with you and focus on getting everything safely from one home to the other.

As boxes come into the new house, put them in the room where they belong instead of creating one giant mountain of boxes in the living room.

Good labeling before the move pays off here.

What If You Only Have 3 Weeks to Move?

You can absolutely do it.

Compress the same system:

Week 1: Declutter + pack everything you rarely use.

Week 2: Pack the majority of the house.

Week 3: Finish everyday spaces and prepare your LAST OUT / FIRST IN items.

The important thing is to start immediately and work systematically rather than randomly.

What If You Only Have 1 Week?

Forget perfection.

Declutter obvious trash and donations, then pack room by room.

Prioritize getting belongings safely packed and clearly labeled over trying to perfectly organize everything before you leave.

And keep that LAST OUT / FIRST IN group separate.
