It’s your first night in the new house. Everyone’s tired, the kids need a bath, and you’re pretty sure the towels are in one of the six boxes marked “Bathroom.”
This is the moment I want you to pack for. Set aside one clearly labeled box with what your family will need from the time you get the keys through breakfast the next morning.
Pack for bedtime, then work backward
Think through what your family does on an ordinary evening. If the kids change into pajamas, brush their teeth, and ask for the same stuffed animal every night, those things get a spot in the box.
For bedtime: Pajamas, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, hand soap, and a towel for each person. Keep sheets and pillows together in a separate bag labeled “Bedding.”
For dinner and breakfast: Water bottles, easy snacks, napkins, and whatever you need for a simple breakfast. If you’re counting on coffee, pack the mug and everything you need to make it together.
For the next morning: A change of clothes for each person, phone chargers, and anything the kids need if they have school the next day.
For pets: Set aside food, bowls, a leash, and cleanup supplies. Keep them where you can reach them as soon as you arrive.
Keep medications, keys, and important documents in a bag that stays with you.
Label it “Open First” and give it a ride
Set your first-night box and bedding bag apart before loading starts. If you’re driving to the new house, put them in your car where you can reach them easily. If they’re going on the moving truck, ask your crew to unload them early and show them where you want them.
That matters even if you’re only moving across Fresno or from Clovis to Madera. A short drive still ends with a lot of boxes coming through the same door.
Open it before you start unpacking the kitchen
Put the toilet paper and soap in the bathroom, plug in a charger, and make the beds while you still have some energy. Then you can eat dinner and call it a night whenever you’re ready.
