How many boxes do I need? a guide by home size

One of the first questions people ask when they start packing is: How many moving boxes do I actually need?

The frustrating answer is that it depends.

A one-bedroom apartment with one person who regularly declutters is very different from a one-bedroom apartment with packed closets, a full kitchen and five years of things tucked into every available cabinet.

But you can still get a pretty good idea before you start packing.

How Many Moving Boxes Do I Need?

For a typical move, your home size is a good starting point:

  • Studio or small apartment: approximately 15–25 boxes

  • 1-bedroom home or apartment: approximately 20–35 boxes

  • 2-bedroom home: approximately 35–50 boxes

  • 3-bedroom home: approximately 50–75 boxes

  • 4-bedroom home: approximately 70–100+ boxes

These are estimates, not rules. The amount you actually need depends much more on how much you own than the square footage of your home.

And there is one other important distinction: these estimates usually assume you're using traditional cardboard boxes in several different sizes.

If you're renting uniform reusable moving boxes, the number may look different depending on the size and capacity of the boxes you're using.

What Makes Your Box Count Go Up?

There are a few places where people almost always underestimate how much they have.

Closets

Closets are sneaky.

A closet may not look like much until every pair of shoes, folded sweater, bag, blanket and item on the top shelf has to come out.

Before estimating your moving boxes, open every closet in the house, including hall and linen closets.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is usually one of the biggest packing jobs in the house.

Pots, pans, dishes, small appliances, pantry food, serving pieces and all those things hiding in the back of the cabinets add up quickly.

Don't estimate your kitchen by looking at the countertops. Open the cabinets.

Garages and Storage Areas

Garages are another easy place to underestimate.

Holiday decorations, tools, sporting equipment, keepsakes and items you've been storing "for later" can add dozens of containers to a move.

How Long You've Lived There

Generally, the longer you've lived in a home, the more likely you've accumulated things without realizing it.

This is why two families moving out of identical three-bedroom houses can need completely different numbers of moving boxes.

Declutter Before You Decide How Many Boxes You Need

Before you start packing, do one quick pass through your home with three categories:

KEEP

DONATE

TRASH

Don't spend three hours debating one sweater.

You're simply trying to remove the obvious things you already know aren't coming to the new house.

Every item you get rid of now is one less thing you have to pack, move and unpack later.

Should You Buy Cardboard Boxes or Rent Reusable Moving Boxes?

Traditionally, moving meant figuring out how many small, medium and large cardboard boxes to buy, assembling them, taping the bottoms, packing them and then breaking them all down again after the move.

That's no longer your only option.

Reusable moving boxes are rigid plastic containers designed specifically for moving. They arrive assembled and ready to pack, stack uniformly and don't require packing tape.

If you're moving in Fresno, Clovis, Madera or the surrounding Central Valley, Briteside Boxes delivers reusable moving boxes directly to you before your move and picks them up after you've unpacked.

That means instead of wondering what you're going to do with a garage full of cardboard afterward, the boxes simply leave when you're finished.

Why Uniform Moving Boxes Make Packing Easier

One thing people don't always consider when choosing moving boxes is what happens after they're packed.

Randomly sized cardboard boxes can create a moving-day game of Tetris.

Uniform boxes stack together.

That makes it easier to:

  • organize packed rooms

  • use vertical space while you're packing

  • move multiple boxes at once on a dolly

  • load a moving truck efficiently

  • keep boxes organized at the new house

At Briteside Boxes, our reusable moving boxes are all the same size and work with our custom dollies, so packed boxes can be stacked and rolled instead of carried individually.

Each box also has a clear label sleeve so you can identify where it belongs without writing directly on the box.

When Should I Get My Moving Boxes?

Earlier than moving week.

Ideally, you want your boxes available when you're ready to start packing things you don't use every day.

Start with:

  • seasonal décor

  • books

  • guest rooms

  • extra linens

  • décor

  • storage areas

  • rarely used kitchen items

Then work toward the things you use more frequently as moving day gets closer.
